Bart. Basket. Bike. Beautiful morning.

Posted on 5:05 AM by Unknown
Clear skies. Coffee-morning breath.
Swollen dry eyes, super tired.
Crisp air and ------- no one wants to work or focus because San Francisco is insane with the whole world series hoopla.
YES.
And sometimes that is just what you need at 8AM.
Is it the weekend yet?!?
Buenos días, San Pancho.

Dads on Wheels: Brian Brooks

Posted on 5:10 AM by Unknown
Bikes and The City in collaboration with BikeNOPA, brings you the weekly series: Dads on Wheels.
Every Tuesday, we have be featured dads from all over the city +around the Bay, and the ways they get around town with their kids.
Please check both our blogs for the current profiles.

We are coming close to a series end so don't be shy and comment away your thoughts and leave comments for the featured riders!

Simone's first ride across the GGB by Brian_Brooks

Dads on Wheels: Brian Brooks
How old are your kids and why do you bike with them? When did you start them biking?
I have on daughter, Simone(2yrs). Cycling is a great way to spent time together exploring the city and beyond. She love riding! She was 10 months old when she had her first bike ride.

How often do you bike with your kinds now ….and do you bike with them for fun or also for taking them on errands, getting them to school?
We ride at lease once a week. We bike for fun, running errands and to day care.

What’s the best thing about biking with your kid(s)?
Getting her outside and enjoying the feeling of cycling. I would love for her to have no fear but respect traffic.

What do you say to relatives or friends who think the streets of San Francisco are not safe for kids to bike?
I've only heard that once and my reply is where in the US are the streets safe walking cycling or driving?

What makes a route or street OK for taking your kids biking on it?
Bike lines, Sharrows or little traffic.

We saw Brian and his baby
We saw Brian and his baby by Pamela Palma - bici girl

Is it even harder getting kids ready for trips if you’re traveling by bike?
Not really. Its actually better because you can't carry as much "stuff"

How often do you bike on your own: recreation/exercise or for transportation also?
As much as possible. a few time a week plus every weekend.

Any advice for other dads who are thinking about biking on their own or with their kids?
At stop lights I also look drivers in the eyes so they know I'm riding with my child. Be confident with your cycling skills. Be aware of traffic.

Gracias Brian!!

Pac hills.

Hills and views, wanderlusting edition

Back in early September, I still had the temporary saddle, and had no shame on walking a block or two around these nasty hills. For those of you outside the City, and those of you who never go or explore neighborhoods near Pac-Heights, here is a little map love:

VIA PACIFIC HEIGHTS
Streets: arguello>sacramento>presidio>jackson>fillmore>pacific>polk

It is actually quite easy to get from anywhere in the Richmond to say, North Beach via Pacific Heights. The City views are so nice on a clear day/night, just beautiful becuase it is so high up. I was thinking maybe I'd run into all these women that live around here (Diane Feinstein, Nancy Pelosi, Danielle Steel, Jessica McClintock) and take them for a bike ride, image that?!... he heeee.
Do any of you do this side of town as a regular ride? fun, work, daily commute or route? do tell.

Right as I was riding past the park, I spotted someone taking pictures and thought, not many tourists hike up here on bikes (though, you'd be surprised!) and a nice casual dapper hat, I was convinced he was a local and I knew him or was about to --- and it was Chris!
I happened to be riding on Jackson, on my way from the Western Addition and heading towards North Beach. What a pleasant surprise =)
ran into Chris!
oh HAI
Here we are at the northwest corner of Alta Vista park, where you can see plenty of foofie dogs and lots of dog walkers as well as the Bay, and parts of the City skyline. We chatted for a bit.
I never run into anyone much at all in Pac-Heights nor riding through Laurel Heights, but we both weren't surprised at all, Chris, a wanderluster of the City himself, was also on a roaming kick and had just descended Twin Peaks.
Chris y yo en Alta plaza park
I really enjoy chatting with Chris, our conversations could go for hours in many - many cultural, political, and community affairs.
You might know of him by the sound of his bike and the rythm of his bike bells decorated by the little coconuts around the city. Or his books.

Chris runs the 'Cycles of history' tours-series benefitting Shaping SF.

Caffeinated demons

Posted on 5:05 AM by Unknown
looks like a caffeinated demon to me
Mi SouthPark caffeine personal demon.

The toughest moments in my life smell like coffee. The happiest memories, smell like coffee.

My addiction for caffeine is intense, and I will be the first one to admit it. I am a complete bitch without it. I am totally normal with it.
Most people think drinking lots of coffee makes you all hyper and jittery and to me, maybe I drink such massive ammounts - that it has the complete opposite effect.

Here is a small percent of them.
This post is dedicated to this past weekend. I drank so much coffee, I felt as if I was back in undergrad, except I'm much healthier now.

Fall fell into Fell street.

Posted on 5:00 AM by Unknown
sun sets street stripes.
Green paint. Repaved.
Packed traffic. Packed bike lane.
Gas station. New bike lane stripes. New mural.
Tickets for bikers riding past red lights. Honking.
Blocking lanes. Idling cars.
Fatalities. Flying cabs. Flying fixies.
Wiggle. This Fell street has it all. Lacks it all.
Chaos.

And sometimes is just nice to enjoy for once, this particular and rather strange quiet Fell street bike lane moment.
